Rocky Mountain Military Snowboard Club, ‘08/’09

Are you a snowboarder between the ages of 9 and 20 and tired of the same old?? Have you seen the kids around the mountain ripping it up, having fun, blasting off the big jumps, and nailing the handrails? Feel like it’s time you got involved with a crew of peers with who you can ride the mountain and spend the winter? The RMM Snowboard Club is just what the doctor ordered. Come ride and learn with coaches, Damien Watson and Craig Gaunce, and get truckloads of all around snowboarding experience. The RMM is not a snow school. The coaches have national and international competition experience, and both have more years of on snow experience than most kids have had on Mother Earth. Sound sweet??

During the scheduled season, all groups will receive nutrition recommendations based on how to take care of their bodies while enjoying such an active and physical life style. All groups will receive avalanche awareness and education throughout the season. All groups will learn how to properly maintain, tune and fix their equipment. All groups will have the opportunity to get coaching and compete in boarder-cross, half-pipe, slope-style, park, and all mountain snowboarding, along with video and photographic feedback and analysis which will produce some well-rounded snowboarders and great athletes who are into the sport because they love it. It is what makes them happy, keeps them in great shape physically and mentally, and keeps them out of trouble.

The RMM Snowboard Club will have 3 groups running all season and all groups will be co-ed. RMM groms, age 9-12, RMM teens, age 13-16, and RMM young adults, age 17-21.

1) RMM grom (9-12) will provide kids with introductory experience to the different riding disciplines, as well as some nutritional guidelines and introductory avalanche awareness. We will give exposure to and teach kids the techniques required to move through the ranks of the Canadian snowboard industry to become the best rider they can be. Introductory competitions will also take place during the season for the groms to try, and the goal at this level is just to have fun.

2) RMM teens (13-16) we have created a program which has a collective aim towards a more aggressive and progressive framework to keep the teens busy and developing quickly. This group will give teen’s exposure to the different riding disciplines as well as nutritional guidelines, and avalanche awareness. The teen’s program will have a weekly schedule with 4 days per week available that will not change during the winter. Also, an event schedule gives teens the opportunity to travel and participate in competitions and events while under the adult supervision of the coaches and a parent chaperone, which is on a voluntary basis.

3) RMM yads (17-20) will have a program with a much more aggressive and intense coaching atmosphere in a jam session format for riders that have already developed a competent skill base. The program will have a set weekly schedule with 4 days per week available. We will take each rider’s respective skill base and work with it to help give him or her the best chance of becoming a national or international athlete. This group will be casual for the adults and they will have the freedom to choose how many days a week they can come out in respect to their busy adult schedules. The RMM young adults will be exposed to professional backcountry guiding and more hands on avalanche training such as digging snow pits, learning to identify and navigate avalanche terrain, and studying snow pack. RMM young adults will have many trips and events scheduled throughout the winter and will have a budget and schedule made up 1 month in advance to travel. Competition at this level is taken seriously as it can lead into great things for young athletes in the snowboard industry. Healthy living and proper nutrition for such an active lifestyle will be evident throughout the winter in the adult group.

Vision/Focus: Our programs are co-ed and are designed specifically for young snowboarders who have progressed to the stage where they are comfortable to tackle the whole mountain in a variety of conditions and are determined to improve. These are fun, technical, skill focused programs for young riders who have successfully progressed through the ski school ranks and are ready to take on all what the mountains have to offer. We are taking steps towards creating the best possible environment to foster rider passion and talent in the Bow Valley. Our programs aim to maximize the technical ability and athletic potential of our athletes within an enjoyable, fun and healthy club environment while exposing riders to the technical cornerstones of free ride, freestyle, and general snowboarding skills. Damien and Craig are among the most highly qualified and experienced riders and coaches in the Bow Valley with over 22 years of guiding/coaching experience between them. Their aim is to provide the perfect balance between technical development and on snow fun. They are passionate about snowboarding and we aim to pass on the passion for the sport at the early stages of rider development. Can you picture…. Olympics, US open, Canadian Nationals, X-Games, and international pro status!

The objective of the RMM is to develop and produce some great positive young athletes into the sport of snowboarding. Why do we want to do this? To have the opportunity to progress the sport in more ways than one: Being strong competitive and innovative snowboarders as well as producing more young athletes to the sport. By being good snowboard influences and coaches to the young snowboard generation, we are in turn pushing the sport that we love further and ensuring that it has a future full of good athletes who push the sport to new heights and bring it to the edge and back, just like we like to do!
